if you plant it they will come

A Hummingbird’s beak length and curvature co-evolved with local plants to match the geometry and color of nectar bearing flowers.

In a ecological context form follows function.

Let’s work together to build practical and beautiful low tech and low maintenance solutions for arid lands that support and build habitat and community.

why native plants?

A Native plant dominant garden is appropriate for several reasons. Native plants have evolved for thousands of years alongside a community of bacteria, pathogens, insects and pollinators. This crates a balanced system that includes food and habitat and so forms the base of the food chain. The farther away that a plant develops geographically from our region the more likely it is to spread aggressively or act as a dead zone for wildlife. The plant has done nothing wrong, it simply lacks the ecological community that it developed alongside and that provides checks and balances for its growth. In our arid region it is especially important to choose plants that are drought tolerant. The roots of native plants form associations with local bacteria and fungi in the soil that help them weather our extreme climate.

our city supports rain gardens

The City of Santa Fe Parks River and Watershed Section has a new program called Rain to Roots that encourages citizens to plant rain gardens that capture water from street run off. Let me help you work with the city to design, install and maintain a rain garden in your yard or parking strip. Low maintenance, low water, habitat, shade!
